Types of Abuse

Physical – Hitting, Punching, kicking, pushing, pulling hair, strangling, throwing objects at you
Emotional – Calling you names, making you feel worthless, using obscenities toward you, humiliating you, telling you that you are crazy, insulting you in front of others
Isolation – Keeping you from friends and family, not allowing you to work, checking the mileage on your car
Sexual – Forcing you to have sex or perform sexual acts against your will
Economic – Causing you to lose your job, making you live on an allowance, making you account for how all the money is spent, taking your money, ruining your credit
Using “Male Privilege” – Treating you like a servant, using male/female roles as an excuse for being abusive
Threats – Threatening to kill you, destroy your life, take your children, commit suicide, report you to social services, commit you to a mental hospital
Intimidation – Putting you in fear by breaking things, destroying your property, yelling, punching walls, raising hands
Using Children – Making you feel guilty about the children, using children to give messages, using visitation to harass you.

Domestic Violence is when two people get into an intimate relationship and one person uses a pattern of coercion and control against the other person during the relationship and/or after the relationship has terminated. It often includes physical, sexual, emotional, and economic abuse.

In 2005 NC Domestic Violence agencies served 50,726 clients in person and 104,726 clients on crisis lines.
